Pictures and Stories – Attu Island, AK

I’ve been thinking about doing this post for a bit so I’ll try to get some good stuff into it.

Way back in 2004 I was coming back into the Coast Guard after being out for a year. They let me back in with an offer to go to a critical fill up at LORAN Station Attu. I really wasn’t too sure what I was getting into at the time except that I knew it was an isolated station and that I’d be there for a year. I started back up in August with a trip to Petaluma, CA for a month and a half of schooling and masde it to Attu in October. Some of my first shots up there were from near the station in mid to late October.

Sunrise October 28th at 11:35am from the roof of the Station at the smoking deck.

The next day:

It didn’t take long for the snow to fall up there and once it fell it was there until June. I didn’t really get out too much over the winter with the weather being too volatile and snowy and I took my 30 days of midtour leave in May so I didn’t really take much until I got back in June.

Another sunrise shot this time at 7:04am.

I can only imagine the photos I could take up there with the gear I have now. I would love to go back up there for another year and just shoot with my Fujifilm X-Pro1 and do long exposures. There would be a chance to get some amazing long exposures at night because there was absolutely zero light pollution. Unfortunately the government decided they don’t need a backup to GPS and decided to shut down LORAN back in 2009.

Well this is getting long I’ll probably do another post with some actual stories and some more pictures later.
